World War 2 Heliograph, Signal Mirror

£525.00

An intriguing piece of World War 2 memorabilia and a great conversation piece! For sale is a 1944 heliograph - or signalling mirror - assembly as used by the British military for sending messages in Morse Code using flashes of sunlight. The instrument is of all brass construction with original black crackled paint finish, and the set comprises the main 5" signalling mirror assembly, auxiliary arm, articulated target sight, duplex mirror, adjustment tool, canvas pouch containing spare parts and spare mirror and backing papers in their original tin, original sturdy leather carrying case and brass-bound tripod stand. The instrument itself is engraved “Helio 5" Mark V" and bears the maker's mark TBS and the serial number B33786. The leather case is similarly embossed with the description of the instrument and its maker's mark.

The heliograph was a simple yet highly effective instrument for sending signals over distances of up to 20 miles using flashes of sunlight by means of a mirror or system of mirrors, with messages being sent using Morse Code. Such instruments were pioneered by Henry Mance in the 1860s and variations of his original design were used extensively by the British military right through the first and second world wars. The sepia image (web sourced) shows such a system in operation.

115cm high when mounted to the tripod stand.

Condition: The instrument is in excellent, original and unrestored condition and still bears its original black crackled paint finish. All mirrors, including the spare, are in very good condition. All controls are working correctly. The leather case is one of the best I've seen, in excellent condition other than for some very minor scuffs. All spares are present including the adjustment tool, spare screws and springs in their original pouch. The tin containing the spare mirror has the usual surface rust. The tripod is of the correct type for this instrument, though dated earlier and by a different maker. The brass components have been polished, with traces of paint remaining, and the tripod legs restored at some stage. The lower section of canvas webbing has wear.
