Victorian Snooker Scoreboard, George Wright of London

£1,350.00

A superb late Victorian combined snooker, billiards and life pool scoreboard by one of the great makers of its time, George Wright of London. His company was founded in 1868 and by the 1880s it had one the largest showrooms in the whole of England. This particular scoreboard most likely dates to around 1880 and is finished in a very fine quality close-grained mahogany with a central slate scoreboard bordered by marble. It is marked "Geo. Wright & Co, London". The twin rollers are painted with black numbers from 0 to 100 and bordered by brass sliders for marking the score. The life pool board comprises twelve sliders, each revealing three mother of pearl discs - one for each life - with a further sliding star for extra lives. This fine scoreboard measures 118cm wide x 80cm high.

Condition: One of the best from my collection, this scoreboard survives in beautiful condition with just the right amount of age-related wear and patina. The mahogany retains its original French Polish with great colour and shine, but also with some craquelure, minor wear, scuffs and scratches consistent with its 140 years or so of age. The brass components are in good shape, now slightly oxidised with age. The sliders are in good order. The central slate panel has chalk marks and some light scratches, the surrounding marble has great colour and is in excellent condition. The bone roundels marking the life pool sliders are discoloured with age. Unusually, the mother of pearl life pool markers are largely intact, with just a couple of losses. The star markers for extra lives are all in good order, each still retaining its bone handle.
