Victorian Magic Lantern, Cased

£465.00

A superb late Victorian wood and brass magic lantern, together with original transit case, R R Beard 'Eclipse' Slide Changer and a couple of lantern slides. Without makers mark, but of great quality. Suitable for use with glass slides in the standard 3¼" format. 54cm long (lens extended), 42cm high. Case 52cm x 24cm x 46cm.

Condition: The lantern is in very good condition. The wood retains its original French Polish which is largely in excellent condition. There is minor blistering to the finish around the doors, as is common with lanterns that would once have been lit using limelight burners. The right hand door has a couple of shrinkage splits. The tinplate is excellent, still with its original 'Russian Iron' finish which is largely unblemished. The lens assembly is very good, the optics free from haze and fungus but with a small edge chip to the rear cluster which has no noticeable effect on performance. There is no lamp holder but the lantern has been tested using an independent light source and found to deliver a strong, crisp image. All of the brasswork retains its original protective lacquer with minor scuffs, scratches and oxidation. One thumbscrew is missing from the sprung clamp that holds the slide carrier in place. The rear curtain looks is a nice addition and looks to be original but is frayed has a couple of holes. The transit case shows normal wear and tear consistent with age and use.
