Victorian Folding Stereo Graphoscope, with cards. Circa 1880
A good late-Victorian folding stereo graphoscope finished in a beautiful close-grained veneer, with adjustable stand, sliding card holder, a large swing-out magnifying lens for viewing Cartes de Visites, post cards etc and twin eyepieces for stereo use. Both the card holder and stand are attractively finished with fretwork detail. The slide carrier may be adjusted backwards and forwards along the viewing platform to allow precise focussing and stereo adjustment, and the whole device folds flat for ease of storage. Included are 28 stereocards of mixed subject matter, many with annotation to the reverse. Each consists of two nearly identical photographs, taken from a slightly different angle, paired to produce the illusion of a single three-dimensional image when viewed through the stereoscope.
42cm long, 25cm wide and 50cm maximum height when in use, 11cm when folded. Magnifying lens 5” diameter.
Condition: The woodwork is generally excellent and protected by its original French Polish retaining beautiful colour and shine, but with numerous minor scuffs, surface cracks and edge losses to the veneer, reflecting its considerable age. There is non-structural shrinkage split (10mm) at the very end of the hinged viewing platform, adjacent to the groove for the sliding card holder. The uppermost section of narrow bead retaining the ground glass screen is absent. The lenses are all good. Fretwork excellent.
