Unusually Large Antique Ship's Masthead Lantern, Copper and Brass, Fresnel Lens
PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL BE AWAY UNTIL 3 MARCH. NO ORDERS WILL BE PROCESSED UNTIL MY RETURN.
Rare to find in this condition, an unusually large and impressive antique copper and brass ship's masthead light measuring an astonishing 65cm, excluding the handle. The brass applied plaque to the top is marked 'Seagull Patent' and there are other plaques marked 'Masthead' and '1489'. The glass fresnel lens is etched 'C B & Co Ltd' for Chance Brothers Ltd of Smethwick, who were based in the West Midlands and became best known as a major engineering company supplying glass and other equipment for lighthouses around the world.
65cm (excluding handle), 28cm wide and approximately 15kg in weight.
Condition: The polished copper is in good condition with some pitting and tarnishing consistent with age and use. There are indentations to both back corners, though nothing that detracts. The brass applied plaques show some wear from repeated polishing. The glass fresnell lens is in generally very good condition with just one small chip to the front, as photographed. The internal oil burner has not been tested and will no doubt require a replacement wick and glass chimney if it is to be used.
