The Ship's Sextant from 'MS Neverita', 56,000 ton Crude Oil Tanker
A great opportunity to buy a piece of maritime history! This is the ship's sextant from the 56,000 ton crude oil tanker MS Neverita, and comes complete with some original service documentation and ship's records pertaining to various passages in the Persian Gulf, Pacific Ocean and South China Sea. The Neverita was built in Amsterdam in 1968 and was operated by the Shell Oil Company, flying under the German flag. As might be expected, the sextant is of professional quality, coming from one of the most venerable makers of such instruments, Cassens and Plath of Hamburg. It bears the serial number 25374 and is dated 28 January 1982. The instrument has a 16cm (6½") radius, and the case measures 31cm x 17cm x 31cm.
Condition: The sextant survives in fine condition. All glass and mirrors are intact. The lens optics are clear, giving a bright crisp image. There are minor scratches to the handle, and a couple to the case, consistent with and use, but overall this is an instrument that has clearly been very well looked after.
