Stereo Graphoscope, Fine Quality, French, Circa 1875
A rare and exceptionally fine quality mid to late-Victorian stereo graphoscope of uncommon design, in beautiful burr wood with carved detail to the top and inlaid stringing framing the viewing platform. The instrument comprises a pair of eyepieces for stereo work with (unusually) rack and pinion focusing adjustment, turned wooden eyecaps, and with a collapsible hinged and mirrored compartment to the rear which stands flush against the slide carrier. A ground glass screen enables the viewing of glass stereopositives, with the hinged and mirrored flap being opened to allow light to enter for viewing conventional stereocards. The larger 6" (15cm) diameter magnifying lens can be used for viewing photographs and Cartes de Visites, with focusing adjustment achieved by moving the slide carrier backwards and forwards. The angle of the viewing platform is adjusted by means of a fretwork stand, which bears a French trademark. The entire set-up folds flat against the viewing platform for compact stowage when not in use. The instrument is of unusually large proportions, measuring 48cm x 26cm when folded, and standing 56cm high when in use.
Condition: Beautifully made and in super condition. Minor scuffs and scratches from use. Wood retains its original French Polish. Lenses in good order. Brass with age-relating tarnishing. Non-original caps to the brass rods holding the slide carrier. Included stereocard and CDV both in good order, glass stereopositive with losses.
