A fine late Victorian folding field camera from the workshops of William Watson of High Holborn, London. This particular example, in the British Half Plate (4¾” x 6½”) format, comes complete with original lens also by the same maker and three correctly fitting double dark slide plate holders. Bellows extension is by rack and pinion, there is a turntable arrangement to the tripod mount, and the camera back can be set to either landscape or portrait orientation. All makers plates are present. The camera measures 42cm at maximum extension, and is 24cm high.

William Watson founded his business in 1837, moved to the High Holborn premises in 1861 (pictured) and traded as William Watson and Sons from 1882. Most likely this camera dates to around 1890. The company made a variety of optical instruments, initially focusing on magic lanterns, but later expanding to produce microscopes and photographic equipment, all of the highest quality.

Condition: The woodwork survives in great shape, protected by its original French Polish and still with good colour and shine and only very minor scuffs and scratches. The brasswork is excellent, again bearing its original protective lacquer and with only minimal wear. The bellows are very good, light tight and without noticeable edge wear. A couple of the folds to the left hand side are slightly misshapen. The bellows extension operates smoothly, without slippage to the rack and pinion. The lens optics are good, free from haze, fungus, chips, cracks etc; slightly dusty, with some peripheral dirt and some cleaning marks to the front element. The iris works correctly. The ground glass focusing screen is in very good condition. The leather handle is present and in good condition. All three dark slides fit correctly. They are consecutively numbered from 1 through to 6.
