Ernemann Antique Horizontal Englarger, IMMENSE proportions, circa 1920

£495.00

An absolutely enormous antique horizontal enlarger from the Dresden factory of one of Europe's great camera makers, Heinrich Ernemann. Though similar in appearance to a magic lantern, it would originally have been used for projecting glass plate negatives when making photographic prints. In over 20 years of collecting it is the largest I have had, measuring an astonishing 53” (135cm) long when both sets of bellows are extended and standing 23” (58cm) high. It weighs in at a hefty 20.7kg (45lb). Circa 1920. Fitted with a 5" Ross XPress f5.4 Lens.

Heinrich Ernemann (1850-1928) was a respected maker of plate cameras, movie cameras, film projectors and other photographic equipment. The company was founded in 1889, initially making top-end wooden cameras for professional photographers. Towards the end of the 19th Century, the company expanded into new premises in Dresden, opening its 'Aktiengesellschaft fur Cameraproduktion' where it became the hub of the German camera industry producing an extensive inventory of equipment, built to the highest standards.

Condition: Excellent overall condition. Both sets of bellows are very good. All controls for bellows extension are working correctly, as are the thumbscrews for adjusting the image orientation. The lens optics are clear and the iris is operational. Some cosmetic wear to lens barrel. Internally, the condensing lens is present. The tinplate is very good, still bearing original paint with only minor scratches, scuffs and losses and a little light/localised surface rust. The original slide carrier is present, as is the lamp holder which will need wiring up if the instrument is to be used.

Overseas buyers: Please contact me for a shipping quotation. Please note that all international shipments, including those in mainland Europe, now attract import duty.
