Antique tabletop stereoscope, French, Gaumont of Paris, 1920s

An antique tabletop stereoscope by Gaumont & Cie of Paris, dating to around 1920, together with two Bakelite slide carriages embossed ‘Stereoscope Classeur, SGDG, L Gaumont & Cie, Ingenieurs Constucteurs, Paris’, each with capacity for 20 glass slides. The instrument is of metal construction, bearing its original crackled brown paint to the outside, and internally equipped with a sprung slide change mechanism that is operated by the circular handle to the side (rotate clockwise to bring a slide into view, and counter-clockwise to advance the mechanism). The other control lever is for precise focusing adjustment. The viewer is suitable for glass slides measuring 6cm x 13cm. It stands 34cm high.

Condition: The instrument in used condition with some age-associated wear to the original paint finish. The mechanism is working perfectly and the optics are very good. There are minor scuffs and scratches to the Bakelite components but no chips, cracks or losses. The makers plate is missing.
