Adjustable Studio Stand, circa 1880 - display your magic lantern!
Rare to the market, a scarce late-Victorian adjustable magic lantern or studio stand of mahogany construction and with heavily engineered cast iron rack and pinion mechanism for adjusting the height by means of a flywheel. It is also fitted with a black canvas-covered top platform with elevation locking clamp, and has original castors to the feet. The platform measures 42cm x 25cm wide, and the height of the stand is adjustable from 76cm to 120cm. The magic lantern in the first and last images is for scale and illustrative purposes only, and is not included in the sale - but please see my other listings for similar items.
This stand would be great for putting on display a prized magic lantern, but also remains perfectly useable.
Condition: This item survives in wonderful condition. The wooden components are protected by their original French Polish and are structurally sound with no visible damage, other than for minor surface scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use. The cast iron components are also in very good order, with just a few paint losses. The rack and pinion mechanism works perfectly and the stand holds its height even when holding a quite heavy magic lantern. The elevation adjustment works correctly. There are a few holes to the canvas covering on the top platform. All castors are present.
Shipping: Because of its size, this item is available for UK buyers and ideally for collection from the Penrith area, 10 miles from Junction 40 of the M6. If this causes difficulties please provide your post code using the contact form and I get a quotation for a door-to-door courier.
