Antique factory pattern mould, mold, wooden, known provenance, railway locomotives, circa 1930

£185.00

An antique wooden foundry mould, used for casting iron components for steam trains. It came from the former Beyer, Peacock & Company factory in Manchester, which made steam railway locomotives for export, plus a vast array of related parts. The company was founded by Charles Beyer and Richard Peacock in the 1850s and was in operation right up until the 1960s. Moulds such as this would have been placed in a suitable sand mixture to form the desired pattern, and an exact duplicate would have been cast by pouring molten metal into the void that was formed when the wooden mould had been removed - a process which could be repeated hundreds of times. Believed circa 1930s, this mould is 24" (60cm) in diameter.

The mould is sold together with some related ephemera including a 10" x 14" original black and white photograph showing the factory, a July 1930 edition of the Beyer and Peacock Review, one of the company's engineering blueprints and some specification sheets.

Condition: A well-used but structurally very sound item with normal wear consistent with age and use. Some worm holes, treated. Cleaned and lightly waxed. Rust to central hub. Photograph with edge wear. Printed material with localised stains and foxing.
