An Edwardian Seaside Holiday, Glass Stereoslide Collection. Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate. 1913
A charming and unique glass stereoview collection depicting a French family's seaside holiday to the Kent Coast during the years leading up to World War 1. Of interest to collectors and local history enthusiasts alike, this set of 25 glass stereoviews comprises largely scenes of Broadstairs, Margate and Ramsgate on the South East Coast of England. These images have great subject matter with plenty of social and historical interest including views of people in Edwardian costume, beach changing huts/bathing machines, old buildings, shops, cafes, trams, fishing boats and steam-powered passenger ferries etc. All of these are unique and unpublished images and are printed onto glass and in the standard Jules Richard Verascope format (45mm x 108mm) and hand-annotated to the centre. Thanks to the magic of stereoscopy - whereby pairs of near identical images are taken from slightly differing viewpoints and then viewed using a suitable stereoscope - these images give a fantastic illusion of three dimensions. The slides come complete with a Bakelite slide carrier suitable for use in Jules Richard 'Taxiphote' type stereoscopes, but are equally suitable for a wide range of hand-held stereoviewers.
