Newton & CO STEREO GRAPHOSCOPE








A Victorian stereo graphoscope by Newton & Co of London. Marked to the front ‘Newton & Co, Opticians to the Queen, 3 Fleet Street, London’, the instrument dates to around 1890. It comprises a pair of lenses for stereo use which hinge flat against the viewing platform to allow a larger (4½"/12cm) magnifying lens to fold up from below, which may be used for viewing conventional photographs, Cartes de Visites (CDVs) etc. The slide carrier may be adjusted backwards and forwards along the viewing platform to allow precise focussing and stereo adjustment, with the whole device folding flat for ease of storage. 39cm (16") long and 22cm (9”) wide. It stands 52cm (20") when in use.
