kelvin, bottomley & Baird Ship’s binnacle

 

A substantial antique ship's binnacle compass by Kelvin, Bottomley and Baird of Glasgow, the compass dial bearing the company's name and also engraved with 'Type LS' and also the serial number 185/43.  The stand is in teak and retains a very good colour/shine.  It is marked 'AFT' to the base, assisting with precise alignment.  Kelvin, Bottomley and Baird operated under this name between 1913 and 1947, later becoming Kelvin and Hughes.  The binnacle stands an impressive 125cm (49") tall and the compass is 23cm (9") in diameter.
