transit theodolitE, William ELLIOTT, London, circa 1840

 

An antique transit theodolite by William Elliott of London, dating to around 1840. His company was established in 1800, originally operating from premises at Grays in London. In 1830 he moved to 56, The Strand and took his sons Charles and Frederick into partnership. William Elliott died in 1853, after which the company operated under the name Elliott Brothers. This particular instrument is engraved ‘W Elliott & Sons, 56 Strand, London’ . It survives with good optics, original fitted mahogany case, and an early (undated) handwritten receipt. Spirit level and compass dial are both in good condition. Height 28cm (11”), length 31cm (12.5”). SOLD - but please visit my online shop for similar items.
