abraham of liverpool, surveyor’s level

A large early 19th Century surveyor’s level by Abraham Abraham of Liverpool. Abraham Abraham, son of Jacob, also an optician, operated as an optician and instrument maker from premises at 8 Lord Street, Liverpool from 1818. He collaborated with various other makers through the course of his career, forming a partnership with the celebrated maker of fine quality microscopes, John Benjamin Dancer in 1840, and another with optician George Wood in 1849. This latter arrangement saw the company operating under the new name of A Abraham and Company, and Abraham himself retired soon after in 1855.
This particular instrument is of relatively large proportions, measuring 47cm (18”) long, 19cm (7.5”) high and with a 9cm (3.5cm) diameter compass rose, which is marked ‘Abraham, Liverpool’. It probably dates to the 1830s. SOLD - but please visit my online shop for similar instruments.
